Wax FAQs

Waxing offers results that last much longer than shaving. Waxing removes hair all the way from the root, unlike shaving. As hair growth returns to the waxed area, there will be no stubble feel. Shaving leaves a blunt end which feels "scratchy", but all hairs returning to a waxed area are brand new hairs. With repeated waxing, the amount of hair that returns may gradually lessen over time until almost no hair returns at all! What growth does continue to return will be softer, finer, and removed with ease.

The Spa recommends purchasing No Scream Cream available at The Spa reception area to offer the most comfortable waxing experience possible. No Scream Cream is a benzocaine-based topical analgesic that minimizes potential discomfort by temporarily numbing your skin so you are barely able to feel anything at all during your waxing session. No Scream Cream must be applied about 45 minutes prior to your waxing session for the numbing properties to take full effect. If you are reserving the first appointment time of the day, you should visit our location to purchase your numbing cream before the day of your appointment. Otherwise, please arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to purchase your numbing cream to apply when you arrive. We are able to mail your product to you for a nominal shipping fee so long as you are purchasing at least two weeks before your appointment. The Spa cannot guarantee the arrival date or time of any shipped package.

Many guests report great benefits from taking a doctor-approved dosage of ibuprofen (Advil) about an hour before their waxing visit. If you have any medical condition please seek advice from your medical specialist before taking any medication.

Use of stimulants such as caffeine or consuming/using vasodilators such as alcohol or lip plumping products (if you will be having your lip area waxed) is not recommended in the hours before or after a waxing session.

This varies from person-to-person based on your personal rate of hair growth and the area you will be waxing. You are able to enjoy results with only one waxing session. If you are waxing for the first time, you should expect some hairs to remain after your first service. Your technician will be as thorough as possible without damaging your skin, but not every hair will be long enough for successful removal during your first wax. For waxing areas below the neck, most guests schedule waxing sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart for maintenance. Staying on track with your waxing appointments gives you the cleanest results and the most comfortable experience as hair "lets go" with less resistance after repeated waxing. After your first wax, if you choose to shave again, you will be starting the process over as a "first timer". Ideal waxing results will be seen after your second or third consecutive wax so long as you do not shave. For that reason, we recommend year-round waxing for all body parts where unwanted hair is present.

For areas below the neck, stop shaving the area you would like to have waxed at least four weeks before your scheduled appointment. Everyone's hair grows at different rates. Not only does the hair of each person grow at a different rate than that of others, many things can affect the speed our own hairs grow: certain medications, supplements, medical conditions, changes in diet, hormone fluctuations, age, even the season of the year! Not every hair on your body grows at the same rate. Some hairs will be long enough to wax while many hairs may still be too short to be removed successfully. For this reason, it is important to wait the recommended amount of time before waxing to guarantee you receive the most benefits from your service. A good rule of thumb is if you are able to pinch the hair growth between your thumb and forefinger and pull it without touching skin or losing grip on the hair, it should be long enough to wax. There is a $10 fee if your hair is too short to provide your service.

Gently exfoliating the area you are planning to wax using a shower pouf during your showers will help remove any built up dead skin cells around your hair follicles, which may lessen discomfort during removal and also may allow for more hairs to be removed during your waxing service. 

With the presence and consent of a parent/guardian, any female 13 years or older can receive intimate waxing services so long as the minor guest is comfortable. For waxing outside of the undergarment area, there is no stipulation for a minimum age but a parent/guardian must be present to offer consent, and the minor guest must be able to speak for themselves to confirm comfort.

The Spa uses a combination of both hard wax and soft wax or "strip wax" based on the area being treated for hair removal. The type of wax used will be determined by your waxing specialist based on what your technician sees in your skin and hair growth. If you have a special concern with a certain type of wax due to an allergy or other concern, you are welcome to share that with your waxing specialist before your service begins. Hard wax is primarily used during intimate waxing services since it does not stick to skin and does not cause skin folds to adhere, unlike soft/strip wax. Soft/strip wax may be used to touch up areas during an intimate wax for cleaner results where hairs may be slightly shorter or for a variety of other reasons. Regardless of the type of wax used during your hair removal service, your technician has chosen the product they feel will offer you the best results with the least risk of discomfort.

Your waxing specialist will work quickly to offer fast and thorough results. A specific amount of time is reserved for your appointment. For this reason, please arrive to your appointment on time to ensure your service is able to be completed.

Includes removal of all unwanted hair from navel (belly button) to tailbone, to three inches outside the panty line on the upper thighs. If you would like a specific pattern of hair to be left behind, discuss that with your waxing specialist before your appointment begins.

Modified Brazilian Wax*, starting at $65
Includes removal of all unwanted hair from navel to tailbone, OUTSIDE labial folds ONLY, to three inches outside of the panty line on upper thighs. If you desire completely smooth results from your hair removal service, it is necessary for you to request a Brazilian Wax.

French Bikini Wax*, starting at $55

We don't want to hurt you! Your waxing specialist may tell you that you cannot be waxed right now after asking you a few questions. Answering questions honestly prior to your waxing appointment is very important for your health and safety. Many habits, conditions, and medications can weaken skin and cause an increased risk of skin tearing, severe irritation, or increased risk of developing an infection. For some concerns, you may simply have to wait a day, week, or even a few months to return for a safe wax service, while other concerns may mean waxing is not a safe method for your hair removal needs. Certain medical conditions may require written consent from a medical specialist stating you have a doctor's clearance for waxing in order to be provided waxing services. 

Do NOT Wax:
- Anywhere you are using Retin-A. Discontinue the use of Retin-A in any area to be waxed at least 7 days prior to waxing.
- Anywhere that has been waxed within 24 hours.
- If you are currently taking antibiotics or within two weeks after.
- Irritated, inflamed, cut, sunburned skin, or within 24 hours after using a tanning bed or tanning in natural sun.
- Any area that has a rash, recent scar tissue, a skin graft, pimples, cold sores, moles, or warts.
- If you are currently under a dermatologist's care for the treatment of acne, or have been within the past twelve months.
- Anywhere you have had aggressive exfoliation such as dermabrasion, chemical peel, or use strong exfoliants like glycolic or salicylic acid.
- If you have a chronic condition such as lupus, AIDS, or any other disease which may compromise the skin barrier.
- If you are currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, and until your medical specialist provides written documentation to consent.
- Any area you've gotten Botox or collagen injections within the last seven days.
- If you take blood thinners, have diabetes, or phlebitis you must have written approval from your medical specialist to receive wax services.

It is possible to receive intimate waxing during your menstrual cycle with the use of a tampon or menstrual cup during your service. However, hormone changes before, during, and directly after your menstrual cycle may cause increased sensitivity. If you are uncomfortable with receiving a waxing treatment during your menstrual cycle and your appointment overlaps with this time of the month, please reschedule your reserved appointment time with a minimum 24-hours' notice to avoid last minute cancellation fees. As a recommendation, scheduling repeat waxing sessions every four weeks will minimize the likelihood of your cycle offsetting your waxing appointment.

Every person is different. While some waxing guests experience little-to-no post-wax concerns, other guests report mild to moderate sensitivity for the first 24 to 48 hours after waxing. It is important to remember that hair removal leaves behind open pores in the skin which are barely visible to the naked eye, but do create an increased risk for your skin to become irritated more easily than normal. These open pores will close on their own within 24 hours as your skin recovers on its own. Until that time has passed, to air on the side of caution, it is best to schedule your waxing appointment on a day when you will not be physically active for the rest of the day after you wax if you will be waxing an area below the neck.

Avoid For At Least 24 Hours After Waxing Below the Neck Area:
- Receiving a Sunless Tan (spray tan), touch services such as full body massage, or exfoliating body treatments since waxing is very exfoliating to skin this may increase your skin sensitivity.
- Physically strenuous activities that require repeated motions or will cause heavy prespiration such as working out at the gym, organized sports, cycling, running, or physical intimacy (after intimate waxes). These activities may increase skin sensitivity, irritation or pose the risk of infection for the first day only. As prespiration contains salt, you may notice mild discomfort in areas where sweat comes in contact with freshly waxed skin.
- Swimming in pools or natural bodies of water, use of hot tubs, jacuzzis, steam baths, saunas, or overly-hot showers as your skin may be more sensitive to heat exposure than usual.
- Extended or unprotected exposure to UV Light such as tanning beds or natural sun. Applying sunscreen on freshly waxed skin may briefly cause a mild stinging sensation, which should dissipate within 15 minutes.
- Wearing tight-fitting clothing which may increase sensitivity. Breatheable fabric such as cotton material is best.

Avoid For At Least 24 Hours After Waxing Areas Above the Neck:
- Spray Tans
- Extensive exposure to UV light such as tanning beds and natural sun.
- Skin exfoliants such as chemical peels, facial scrubs, exfoliating skin treatment products such as those containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid or retinoids.

With repeated waxing sessions, nearly all waxing guests experience less and less sensitivity following waxing. After your first waxing session, you will be better able to know how your skin reacts (or does not react) to waxing services. Many guests also report their first wax "wasn't nearly as bad as they imagined it would be", and remember - with regular repeat waxing, your second wax and beyond will be easier than your first!

This soothing cream reduces skin-on-skin friction post-wax, preventing irritation before it starts. Tea Tree Oil reduces bacterial activity to help prevent irritation, as well.

This roll-on gel is a must for everyone who waxes! The soothing gel gently exfoliates away dead surface skin cells to prevent the development of ingrown hairs. Repeated use is key for optimal results from this product.
